Description:

The Director of Patient Care Services for Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine reports to the Assistant/Associate Dean for Clinical Education and Patient Care and is responsible for the day to day management of the College of Dental Medicine Clinic and will be responsible for the integration of all services located in the Dental Clinic.


Essential Job Functions


Clinic Operations:

1. Establish schedules, task assignments and allocation of staff resources, space and equipment to ensure high quality and effective patient care

2. Manages all day to day operations of the Dental Clinic including staff scheduling, patient scheduling, work flow, materials management, instrument management and sterilization, patient care information systems, dental records, billing and collections, referrals and authorizations, and operational control (audit) systems.


Staff Supervision:

3. Recruit, hire, train and conduct performance reviews of clinical support staff.

4. Provide both mentoring and ongoing clinical skills training for the dental clinic support staff.

5. Build a solid team environment by being a hands-on motivator and provide a high standard of work and quality patient care.

6. Ensures dental clinical support staff complies with university, state and federal regulations including those related to infection control and patient confidentiality.


Ombudsman:

7. Serve as liaison / ombudsman for patients, faculty, students and staff as it relates to clinical activities.


Support the Assistant / Associate Dean for Clinical Education and Patient Care:

8. Assist in development and enforcement of clinic policy and procedures.

9. Work collaboratively with the Assistant/Associate Dean for Clinical Education and Patient Care, CDM Administration, and Clinical Faculty to meet Dental Clinic Operational goals for quality and performance and to implement necessary corrective measures.

10. Effectively communicates with the Assistant/Associate Dean regarding Dental Clinic goals and plans, operational activities and issues, staff feedback and concerns, and problem solving.

11. Participates in annual operational budgeting process and effectively manages resources to achieve objectives within established budget parameters.

12. Identifies and recommends to the Assistant/Associate Dean, process and productivity improvements initiatives that are designed to enhance customer satisfaction, clinical quality and operational cost-effectiveness.

13. Work on special projects and other duties as assigned.


Pursues professional growth and maintains competence through participation in outside seminars and workshops, professional organizations and other professional development activities, as directed/approved by the Assistant/Associate Dean and CDM Administration.


Skills:

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.


1) Organizational skills necessary to coordinate all aspects of the College of Dental Medicine Clinic daily operations and business practice.

2) Computer experience and knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Office and practice management systems.

3) General knowledge of dental billing and collection practices.

4) Knowledge of general front office skills and dental office procedures.

5) Demonstrate excellent customer skills, communication skills and interpersonal skills.


Qualifications Standard:

1) Education: Bachelor's Degree

2) Experience: Five years experience in an area of dental practice management. Experience in a teaching environment with dental students or residents preferred.
